Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity: New Inscriptions to UNESCO’s List

UNESCO has recently added new cases to its “Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity”. Among the many fascinating cultural practices, e.g. from the fields of music and dance, crafts, customs, social organisation (and many others), there are some particularly exciting new listings that are especially interesting for our INSUAH Living Labs in Bandung and Nuremberg/Bamberg:

The Indonesian Jamu wellness culture, a form of herbal medicine and treatment that has been practised in Indonesia since the eighth century. The medicine is prepared using herbs and spices often planted by Jamu makers themselves, who then concoct recipes tailored to each customer’s age, lifestyle, and health concerns.

Traditional forms (and their inscribed knowledge, techniques, and organization) of irrigation in Europe – represented among others by Franconian examples. Systems, that utilise gravity and hand-made constructions such as channels and ditches to distribute water from naturally-occurring water catchment points (such as springs, streams and glaciers) to the fields.

Exciting News! You will definitely learn more about those practices, soon!
